FAQs on Overseas Citizenship of India Card


Q.No. 1 Who are eligible for registration as overseas citizen of India and grant of OCI card? Where can I find the detailed information on this?

Foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at anytime after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947 and his/her children and grand children, provided his/her country of citizenship allows dual citizenship in some form or other under the local laws, is eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
Minor children of such person are also eligible for OCI. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.

Q.No.3 What is the fee for issue of OCI card?


Fee for issue of OCI card is Euro 216/-.

Q.No.4 My child is a minor. How much I have to pay for issue of OCI card for
him/her?


Fee for issue of OCI card is Euro 216/-.


Q.Νo. 5 After making online registration, what I am supposed to do?
Please take the following steps:

    Take a print out of the OCI registration Part A
    Take a print out of Part B and fill it up by handPaste your recent photographs size 51mm x 51mm, front face coverage not more than 80%
    Sign the application and put your specimen signature within the box
    Prepare supporting documents as under:

(a) Copy of previous Indian passport

(b) German passport in original and a copy of the same

(c) Copy of nationality certificate issued by German authorities

(d) If you are making application for your child/children, copy of your marriage certificate and birth certificate of child/children

(e) If there is any change in name/surname, copy of documents relating to change of name/surname

(f) Proof of “Surrender of their Indian Citizenship & Cancellation of Indian Passport” (see FAQ No.13 & 14)

(g) Self attest all the supporting documents

(h) Make two sets of application forms and all supporting documents

If you intend to come to the Consulate in person, please bring your application in two sets along with the requisite fee i.e.Euro 218/- per application.

Please note that incomplete applications will not be processed. Applicants are required to specify their occupation/profession clearly in English in their application form.

Please check your eligibility before making application for OCI card.


Q.No. 6 Will I get any acknowledgement of receipt of my application from the Consulate?

 

If you want an acknowledgment for receipt of application, please send an acknowledgment-slip and an additional self-addressed envelope with postage stamp of Euro4 along with your application form.


Q.No. 7 How long it takes to get an OCI card?


The processing takes about 4-5 weeks after receipt of OCI application, complete in all respect.


Q.No. 8 How can I check the status of my OCI application?


After 3-4 weeks from the date of receipt of application by us, you may check the status online. The on-line status link is attached to the same website.


Q.No. 9 I have been living in Germany with my wife for the last 10 years. We are holders of Indian passports and valid resident permits. My child is a minor and is having a German passport. How can I apply for an OCI card in respect of my child?


Being holders of Indian passports, you are not eligible for OCI cards. As per rules, if the parents are not eligible for OCI cards, the minor child is also not eligible for OCI card. However, you may apply for a PIO card in respect of your child.

Q.No. 11 I am a PIO card holder. Now I wish to get an OCI card. Please guide me.

Please follow the procedure mentioned in answer to Q.No.5 above. Please enclose the PIO card alongwith your OCI application so that we can cancel the same. OCI fee for
PIO cardholder is Euro 22/-
Please check your eligibility before making application for OCI card.


Q.No. 12 If I wish to change my minor son’s/daughter’s PIO card to an OCI card, how much fee I will have to pay?


For a minor child who is holding PIO card, OCI fee will be Euro 125/.
 

Q.No. 13 Am I supposed to surrender my Indian nationality before applying for an OCI card? If so what is the procedure.
Yes. OCI applicants are required to surrender their Indian passports to the Consulate and obtain a Surrender Certificate. The OCI applicants on or after 1st June 2010 and surrendered their Indian passports to the German authorities, may obtain Surrender Certificate upon submission of a documentary proof of the surrender of the Indian passport to the German authorities. Fee for this service will be Euro 115
The OCI applicants, who acquired German nationality before 1st June 2010 and surrendered their Indian passports to the German authorities, may obtain an acknowledgement regarding surrender of passport/Indian nationality upon submission of a documentary proof of the surrender of the Indian passport to the German authorities. Fee for this service will be Euro 12
Application may be made using the Miscellaneous Services Form along with a photo-copy of the nationality certificate, copy of German Passport and copy of the Indian passport that has already been surrendered. In case the original Indian passport is with the applicant, it must be submitted to the Consulate for cancellation


Q.No. 14 I do not have any proof of having surrendered my Indian Passport. Can I still obtain the Acknowledgement of Surrender of Indian Citizenship?


Those applicants who have ever held Indian passports and are unable to produce the same for surrender for any reason (loss/misplaced/submitted to Home Office long time back) are required to furnish a notarised affidavit (if the passport is already expired) and police report (in cases where Indian passport is still valid).


Q.No. 15 Being an OCI card holder, for how many times can I travel to India every year?.

The OCI card holders can travel to India any number of times.

Q.No. 16 I am OCI card holder, for how long can I stay in India on a single visit? Is there any stay stipulation for OCI card holder on a single visit?


There is no stay stipulation for an OCI card holder. An OCI cardholder can stay for as long as required during each visit.


Q.No.17 Do OCI card holders require to register themselves on arrival in India?


There is no requirement of registration for an OCI cardholder. They are exempted from registration with local police authority for any length of stay in India.


Q.No.18 Can OCI card holder take up an employment in India?


Yes.


Q.No.19 Can OCI card holder indulge in gainful business?


Yes.


Q.No.20 Are there any activity not allowed for OCI card holder?

OCI card holders are required to take permission for undertaking mountaineering, missionary and research work. They cannot visit Protected/Restricted Areas without permission
